Crossfit Games Final 2020 – Atalanta

What Is The Crossfit Games ‘Atalanta’

Atalanta; the name of a workout we hope we never see on the board at the box. Atalanta is an ‘extremely advanced’ workout and is something the vast majority of Crossfit athletes will need to scale.

For Time:

  • 1 Mile Run
  • 100 Handstand Push-Ups
  • 200 Alternating Pistol Squats
  • 300 Pull-Ups
  • 1 Mile Run

Wear a weighted vest (10kg/7kg)

Atalanta is a sadistic blend of ‘Mary’ and ‘Murph’ and was debuted as one of the toughest Crossfit Games finals ever. This event saw Mat Fraser and Tia-Clair Twomey crowned not only winners of the 2020 Crossfit Games in the Male and Female categories, but also the coveted title of ‘Fittest in History’ for their respective genders.

Here at Force Fitness we are inspired by this workout and to us it represents the pinnacle of fitness. If you are considering this workout, it is not about your time; it’s about starting it. Those who start and attempt this workout, with a weighted vest, are committing themselves to a brutal experience. But even if they fail, they learn, and they grow, and ultimately they win.

Attempting Atalanta is about proving yourself to yourself and pushing yourself further than you thought you could go. For those serious about completing the workout, try this version below:

Split Atalanta

For Time:

  • 1 Mile Run
20x Rounds of:
  •  5 Handstand Push-Ups
  • 10 Alternating Pistol Squats
  • 15 Pull-Ups
  • 1 Mile Run

Wear a weighted vest (10kg/7kg)

Aside from the immense pride and achievement you get from completing such a workout, there are a lot of physical benefits as to why you should attempt Atalanta. The sheer volume of Handstand Push-Ups (HSPU) is going to hugely improve the strength and power of your triceps as well as your HSPU technique. The volume of alternating pistols is going to improve your coordination under fatigue but also the stamina in your quads and your mental resilience.

But the real challenge is 300 pull-ups. This is where the athlete enters a world of pain, this will challenge your grip, your forearms, your back, your biceps, and more so your cardiovascular system. 100 HSPUs and 200 pistols have hugely depleted your energy reserves and you are gasping for air – this is not the best time to attempt 300 Pull-Ups.

But whatever happens, we want you to try it. We stand behind you and would love it if you tagged us in your posts on socials and let us know how you got on with Atalanta. Push yourself today, train with force.
