Rucking backpack vs backpack with bricks – why use a rucking backpack

August 13, 2024 3 min read

One of the best things about rucking is how simple it is. Strap on a weighted pack and off you go. Which begs the question – do you really need a purpose-made weighted ruckpack, or can you fill a normal backpack with heavy stuff instead?

Why do you have to ruck with weights?

The difference between rucking and walking or hiking is the weight on your back. To turn a hike into a ruck, you need some kind of pack loaded with some kind of weight. Rucking originates from military training practices, where heavy packs were loaded with essential items like clothing, water, survival and combat gear. Modern rucking means you don’t have to fill your pack with household items. You are free to choose whatever kind of rucking weight you want. And for many people, that means using a purpose-made rucking backpack loaded with special weighted plates.

Why use a rucking pack with weighted plates?

Weight distribution – weighted rucking backpacks distribute weight evenly across your back and shoulders, reducing strain and potential injury.

Durability - these packs are built to withstand the extra weight and frequent use (and the weather!)

Comfort - features like padded shoulder straps, fully adjustable straps, and back panels make longer rucks more comfortable.

Precision – using ruckpacks with special weight plates mean you can track and measure how much weight you’re rucking with.

Difference between rucking backpack and rucking plate carrier

Rucking backpacks are designed like a regular backpack, with plenty of space inside for other items. They have a special protected section for your weight plates. Rucking plate carriers are much slimmer and smaller, like a weighted vest but only on your back. Both have their uses – if you’re going on longer rucks, or need your ruckpack to be multi-purpose, choose a rucking backpack. If you will only be using your weighted apparel for rucking (and want to keep things as simple as possible), you might prefer a rucking plate carrier.

Why choose a rucking backpack with weight plates

- Rucking backpacks are designed to carry weights

- They give you an even weight distribution

- They’re comfortable for long distances

- They offer extra pockets for phone, keys etc

- Using weighted plates allows for precise weight measurements

- Often include hydration systems and extra pockets

- They’re made from super durable materials designed for weights

Rucking with a regular backpack plus DIY weights

- Lower initial outlay (using heavy everyday items)

- Is more true to the original roots of rucking

- But difficult to get comfortable, even weight distribution

- Backpack may not be sturdy enough for the weights

- Difficult to measure exact weight you are carrying

- Load may shift during rucks, increasing injury risk

What do military use for heavy rucks

Military ruckpacks can exceed 45 kg, which is why military personnel train extensively with loaded packs. It's also why they use purpose-built rucksacks with fully-adjustable straps, designed to distribute the weight as comfortably as possible. What’s in a typical load-out?

  • Combat gear like helmet, body armour, weapons, ammunition
  • Survival equipment first aid kit, compass, maps, communications devices
  • Extra uniforms, socks, and weather-appropriate gear
  • Food and water for several days
  • Sleeping bag and shelter half/bivvy
  • Mission-specific equipment like explosives or surveillance gear

Some hiking events - like the Fan Dance, a 24km SAS Selection test march in the Brecon Beacons – replicate military packing. For the Fan Dance, you’ll need to make the required weight out of sandbags or weighted plates, water, clothing, food, navigation tools, and emergency kit.
